ABS had the pleasure of hosting John Raffaele, Director of
Educational Services for the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals, Inc (NADSP). John came to ABS to share more on the NADSP Code of Ethics. John presented two half day
sessions on the basics of the code of ethics as well as a full day session to train leadership staff on how to implement and teach the code of ethics throughout the agency. The code of ethics is based on the
principle that direct support professionals (DSPs) have values, skills, and knowledge that constitutes a unique and important profession. The code is made of nine tenets that is intended to be incorporated into everyday direct support practices. The
training also explored typical ethical dilemmas that DSPs experience and how using the code of ethics can help guide support teams through those difficult situations.
The nine tenets of the code of ethics are:
Person-Centered Supports
Promoting Physical and Emotional Well-Being
Integrity and Responsibility
Confidentiality
Justice, Fairness and Equity
Respect
Relationships
Self-Determination
Advocacy
John provided a fun filled and energetic day for those who attended one of his
sessions. ABS staff appreciated the vast amount of knowledge and experience that John shared with them.
